DAY 9

DAY 9 FINGER LAKES FINAL DAY

Hi Everyone,

Well, this is our final slide show and blog. I want to thank each and everyone of you who went on this 6 State Mini Road Trip with us. We felt as if all of you were with us every day and seeing this beautiful country through our eyes. I hope someday, again, you can all come with us and see more of this great country.

I also want to take this time to thank everyone who helped me celebrate my 50Th birthday. I used ALL of my "birthday money" for this 50Th birthday trip. The memories we have made during the past 10 days has given me an unforgettable 50Th birthday.

We visited several more wineries today. All of them, again, so different. We met many animals along the way, one even taking a poop. We ate lunch over looking Cayuga Lake and went to 4:30 pm mass at Holy Family Church (this mass was only 40 minutes). We road past many Amish homesteads and saw Amish children playing, clothes hanging out to dry, and horse and buggies. We road past one homestead where there was produce for sale on the honor system. A box was left out for the money and you just take what you want. CAN'T DO THAT BACK HOME!!! I purchased a 10lb bag of Amish-grown potatoes. You will all get a potato when I get back home.

Tonight, I had cookies with Hailee. We ate our "Grandma cookies" at the exact same time (via cell phones). Thanks Hailee.

Now, I am going to close up my laptop and pack it away. As our last song says, we are on our way Home Sweet Home. We have been on many, many trips over the last 20 years; however, this has been the most memorable because YOU were all with us. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. We love you all.

DAY 8

DAY 8 FINGER LAKES, NY

BEFORE I BEGIN, LET ME APOLOGIZE FOR TONIGHT'S HUGE BLOG. IF YOU BEAR WITH ME AND STICK IT OUT, YOU WILL FIND THAT THIS BLOG WAS WORTH READING.
Today we explored the Finger Lake Wineries. We visited 8 of the 100 wineries in this area. They were all so different. One was a Medieval Castle, one a King's Court Castle and a few other classy vineyards. The most unusual and coolest of them all was 3 Brother's Winery. Each brother has his own individual winery on the property based on their own unique personality. One brother who rides a Harley and has a long, red ponytail owns Rogue's Hollow. Another brother who is very passionate, has five kids and a wife owns Passion Feet Vineyards and Wine Barn. The youngest brother who is the business man of the family and the Art Major, who collects lighthouses and who designed ALL of the wine labels owns Stony Lonesome Estates. All 3 wineries are as different as are the brothers. All 3 brothers, together, own Barley Yards Brewing Co.
Do you ever feel as if God puts you in just the right place at just the right time??? We had a very up-lifting and spiritual experience tonight. (It was right up there with our 2-hour Sunday Mass in Kentucky). It has been raining ALL day. After the last winery at 6pm, we were hungry and ready for dinner. The rain had stopped and there was a beautiful restaurant on the property overlooking Seneca Lake. Carl wanted to eat there tonight. I can't explain it, but, it just didn't seem "right" to me. I said, "Let's just go back to our hotel and eat there again". So we headed back. We were low on gas and had seen a gas station up the road about 1/2 mile. But, when we got there, it was now closed. As we keep driving, we saw a man with 2 little boys walking on the side of the highway. I said to Carl, "That is so crazy and dangerous". About 1/2 mile up the road , we saw a car with flashes on and no one inside. Carl said, "I'll bet that's the car of the man with the 2 boys. We debated on whether to go back and see if he needed help. After praying, "Please God, help us do the right thing and keep up safe", we turned around and went back. I introduced myself and asked him if that was his car broken down. He said he ran out of gas and was walking to the gas station down the road. I told him that station was now closed. He looked very worried and the boys didn't say a word. I asked him if he wanted a ride to a station in the direction we were going in. He accepted. We found out that Bill (from Long Island, NY) was taking his two twin, 6-year-old boys (Theo and William) to Daddy and Me Camp for the weekend when they ran out of gas and he did not have a cell phone. We stopped at the closest gas station which was 2 1/2 miles from his car. He filled a gas can with 2 gallons of gas and we took him back to his car. Immediately after the gas was in his tank and the boys were back in their car, it started to pour again! We followed him back to the same station so he could fill up and then went our separate ways.

The part that gives me goosebumps is that when I went inside the gas station to pay for our gas, I looked down and there on the floor was a penny (heads up) with the words "IN GOD WE TRUST". I so believe in fate and now realize why that beautiful restaurant on Seneca Lake didn't feel "right" to me.

So sorry you had to read this HUGH blog, but I felt it was important to share with you how GOD works in mysterious ways.

Talk to you tomorrow.

DAY 7 NIAGARA FALLS / NY

Our trip is getting shorter and shorter. Today we tried to cram in as much as we could before leaving Niagara Falls. Our checkout time was 2pm. First we went to another 4D show. This one was called The Fury of the Falls. It started out as a very cute cartoon about how the falls started millions of years ago. Then doors opened and we walked into a room with 360 movie screens. We stood up and held onto a railing. During the show, we experienced a blizzard (windy, lots of snow fell on us). It rained on us and we experienced a terrible thunder and lightening storm (the floor rocked and lightening struck all around us --Nicole, you would have been looking for a kitchen table). Finally, we went down the falls. The floor rocked and moved violently and we got splashed on with lots of water. It was so much fun.

We took the Journey behind the falls. We had to wear yellow ponchos. Flat Stanley did not want to go because he was scared. We put on his poncho and promised to keep him safe in my backpack. He did great!

After packing up the truck, we headed to customs again. I was a little nervous because we had exceeded the limits of what we could bring back into the states. However, again, I logged every detail down in my book and had all the receipts. I was prepared to pay a hefty duty. When we came to the border patrol, he looked at my book, laughed and said "You do realize that you are way over the limits allowed?". I said yes, and then he said with a smile, You're all set, have a safe trip back home". Phew!!!!

We are now in Finger Lakes, NY. Wine Country! After a nice dinner, a swim in a 85 degree pool, we are now ready for bed. Hey, notice the time. I am very early tonight posting my blog. I'm getting pretty good at this now!

Talk to you tomorrow. Hailee, don't forget our cookies and milk. Call me.

DAY 7

DAY 6 NIAGARA FALLS CANADA/USA

Hi All,

Went to Clifton Hill which is an area of many tourist attractions. Went on the 4D movie ride. It was so much fun. We felt like we were driving monster trucks. When we hit the water, water sprayed on us. Then, we rode snow mobiles and it got very cold and it started snowing on us!
We tried to find our way out of a maze and went on another 4D ride about Niagara falls.

We went over to the New York side of the falls. One of the items Hailee asked for was water from both the Canada and New York sides of the falls. Well, getting the water from the Canada side was soooooooooooooooo easy. We just bought a bottle of it in a gift shop. HOWEVER, getting it from the USA side is another story. First of all, they didn't sell it in any shop. We asked if there was any place we could get it and was told no. We were also told that if caught there was a $10,000 fine and 8 years in prison. We were advised to just fill the bottle with tap water and say it was from USA. Of course, I was not happy with THAT answer. We walked over to a little island called Three Sister's Island. We went through the woods and found a little spot where the water was calm and within reach. AND, YES, THAT'S WERE WE GOT THE WATER!!!!

We ate dinner tonight at the Revolving Skylon Tower. The food was amazing (almost as good as Emily's cooking). While we were eating, the tower rotated 360 degrees (one full turn per hour). The view was incredible. We were lucky enough to witness the sunset while we were there.

After dinner, we tried our luck at the Niagara Casino. We made an agreement to only spend $20 each. We played for 1 hour and walked away ahead. We made $1.50 from the exchange
rate of money, we found a dollar on the casino floor and we won $30.10. I also found a cash-out ticket for .2 cents. So, all together we made a net profit of $31.62. What a great night!!!!

After dinner had tea and creme brulee at our hotel lounge while listening to a really good guitar player. Getting late now and going to bed. We leave here tomorrow and head for the last stop on our journey-- Finger Lakes, NY. See you all then.

DAY 5 NIAGARA FALLS

Hi Again,
Well our trip is half way over! See, Hailee, we are on our way back now. Boo Hoo. I miss everyone back home, but we really are having a wonderful time.

Left Ohio this morning around 10 am. It was a very very long drive. Miles and miles of nothing. We drove for about 71/2 hours and arrived at Niagara Falls, Canada around 5pm. We ate dinner at Coco's at our hotel and then explored the Falls. It was so beautiful as you can see. I felt as if I was on a honeymoon, so romantic.

Picked up lots of gifts. Hailee, I got your water from the Canada side. Tomorrow we are going to walk to the New York side and get your American water.

Carl, dad wanted me to show you the Formula One bottle he picked up in Indy.

Good night everyone, sweet dreams, be back tomorrow night.

PS: everyone has been asking about Flat Stanley. He is a character in a children's story about a little boy who becomes flat when a picture falls on top of him. He then travels all over the country by being mailed in a large envelope. My friend Sharon makes Flat Stanleys with her class and they travel with anyone who is going on a trip. I took Flat Stanley on this trip and he has been very good. He is looking forward to a day at the falls tomorrow.

DAY 4

DAY 4 INDIANA & OHIO

Today we headed for Indiana and Ohio. Our first stop was at Deam Lake in Indiana to find some beach sand for Hailee. She gave us a list of items to find for her on our trip. Beach sand was one of the items on the list. Deam Lake was beautiful, I could have stayed there all day.

Next we stopped at Huber Winery also in Indiana. It was a great winery. Carl was in his glory! We had a wine tasting and then bought some of their great wine. We were concerned about bringing the wine into Canada because of the customs. I had a great idea to have all the wine shipped to our NY hotel (they couldn't ship to RI). The winery shipped all the wine we purchased at their winery PLUS all the bottles we bought from other wineries. All of our wine will arrive in Auburn, NY on Thursday.

We ate lunch at the Mug N Bun drive-in. It was fun. We turned on our lights and they came out to our truck to get our order. Our lunch was brought out on a tray and hooked onto our window. It was just like the A&W root beer drive In's from long ago. We drove to the Indy 500 Motor Speedway and then continued on to Ohio. We arrived at our hotel at 9:45 PM. After a quick swim and jacuzzi, we got ready for bed. Carl is already asleep and I am going now. We have to wake up early to get a head start for Niagara Falls tomorrow.

Our plans have changed for tomorrow. We decided not to stop at the Henry Ford Museum just outside of Detroit, MI. We have been warned by several people who know about Michigan that Detroit is not a safe area. Even though the museum is well worth seeing, we have been told to be very very careful of the area, especially because we are tourists with money. We decided not to take any chances, so we will just drive straight to Niagara Falls. Talk to you tomorrow. Good night.

DAY 3 KENTUCKY AND INDIANA

Hi Everyone,

Today we started our day by going to 9am mass. Would you believe that we were at mass for 2 hours!!!! We went to St. William's Church which holds an alternative type of catholic Sunday mass. They have only 1 mass per week at 9am on Sundays. There are no statues or crucifix. The priest has an altar in the middle of the room and we all sit in a circle around him in folding chairs. There is an 11-piece band (drums, piano, 3 different type of guitars and bongos plus vocalists) There were 2 homilies by a man and a woman and lots of up-beat music. At the sign of the peace, we all got up and walked around hugging and kissing EVERYONE! This took at least 10 minutes. We held hands during the mass at different points and at the part were we offer prayer intentions, people got up one by one to ask special prayers for themselves or others. Carl got up and asked for a special prayer request. At the Eucharist, the priest offers wine in huge cobalt blue wine goblets and large pita breads cut up into bite size pieces in what looked like a large ceramic pasta dish. We all wore name tags and he offered the bread to us by our name. After everyone had received communion, they came by with the rest of the pita bread and gave us all hand fulls as seconds. At the very end of mass, people come up one by one and give announcements about their families, extend invitations to their homes for dinners and asked for rides to places they need to get to. THIS WAS THE MOST UNIQUE AND SPIRITUAL MASS I HAVE EVERY ATTENDED IN ALL MY YEARS. IT WAS BY FAR THE BEST THING WE DID TODAY.

We had lunch at Lynn's Paradise Cafe which was also a very unique place. I think I am getting hooked on Fried Green Tomatoes. Emily is going to have to make this for me when I get home.

We went back to Louisville Slugger Museum and had a great time. That place is awesome and I don't even like baseball!!!!

We took a short ride to Indiana for ice cream and to look at the Kentucky skyline over the Ohio River. There is a bridge that connects KY to IN. Carl decided he wanted to cross this bridge by foot so he could say he walked from Indiana to Kentucky. So he did. He said it was breathtaking.

Other things we did today was go to Kaelin's where the very first cheeseburger was created in 1934. We visited Colonel Sander's grave site. We were fascinated to learn that he and his wife were born in September (her birthday was today) and they both died in December (him on Matt's birth date). We found strawberry cake like the one Lee makes and brought some back to the hotel for dessert. It was very good, but NO comparison to Lee's homemade cake.

Did two loads of laundry tonight (it's free at this hotel) and now going to bed. Goodnight All

DAY 3

DAY 2 KENTUCKY

We started our day by opening an envelope and note from Bonnie and Hailee. We would leave the kids envelopes with little gifts and notes to open everyday when we would go away on vacation. This would give them something to look forward to and not miss us so much. It's nice to see that Bonnie is carrying on the tradition. Thanks Bonnie, Hailee and Josh.

We headed to Kentucky and the weather was beautiful all day. Sunny and warm. We stopped at a vineyard for a wine tasting. At the vineyard, we came in contact with a beautiful yellow butterfly. (we have been surrounded by butterflies on this trip). The butterfly let us pick it up and hold it. It even stayed still so I could take it's picture. WEIRD!!!

We toured Louisville Slugger Museum and saw the monument of the two women who created the song "Happy Birthday to You". This song is copyright protected till 2030.

We ate dinner at the River Bend Winery and Bistro. Food was wonderful. Ending our day in a nice, comfortable, king size bed. Good Night

DAY 1 WEST VIRGINIA

DAY 1 WEST VIRGINIA

Hi Everyone
At midnight we started our journey for our six-state road trip. At 4am we pulled over in Boontown, NJ for a little break and nap. Thanks Matt for the tinted window cling-ons -- they worked great!! We had a very nice, peaceful rest. At 9:15 am a butterfly flew into our truck. It was a nice feeling that my mom was with us on this trip. (Hailee, maybe it was the butterfly from your cocoon)

Gas is cheep here; $3.27/gl. We crossed the Mason-Dixon line which was a line between Pennsylvania and Maryland to divide the free and slave states before the war between the states.
We went through Sideling Hill which is a 350 million year old mountain in Maryland that was blasted to make a six-lane highway. The first car went through in August, 1985. We ate dinner at a gourmet restaurant in W.V. called Blossom Dairy.
Well, going to sit in the jacuzzi and go to bed.
